HideAlways 1.0 - let's the Mac remember that you've asked it to hide windows other
than the ones for the application you are using.
HideAlways 2.0 - an enhanced version of the original HideAlways. Lets you request
that specific application's windows's will always be visible,
even when you are have asked for all others to be hidden. It also lets
you request that specific application's windows be hidden. Your
selections are remembered in a prefs file so you can set up your
requests once and HideAlways 2.0 will remember them between
restarts and shutdowns.
In System 7, the Application menu (the little icon in the upper right-hand corner of your screen) has an item called "Hide Others" that lets you hide the windows of the other active applications...pretty slick. The problem is that if you switch to another application, your Mac no longer remembers that you wanted the other applications' windows to be hidden and you have to reselect "Hide Others" to de-clutter your screen once again.
Not fatal, but inconvenient.
HideAlways fixes this problem by remembering that you selected "Hide Others" and seeing to it that "Others" stay hidden as you switch around amongst your applications. When you tire of your windows hiding, you can cause them to show again by selecting "Show All" from the same menu.
In addition to the original HideAlways function described above, HideAlways 2.0, provides a little more discretion to the "Hide Others" and "Show Others" functions of System 7. When you've got all of the other windows hidden using "Hide Others" you find that you actually didn't want to hide all of the others. You might want a DA's windows showing (like the Calculator or Alarm Clock DA's) or another application's windows (or all of the above). HideAlways 2.0 lets you do this by going to each of the applications or DA's that you want to see and select "Show <application or DA name> Always" item from the application menu. After you've done this, you'll find that when you switch from application to application, you'll be able to see the applications/DA's that you've "Shown Always" and any others will remain hidden.
HideAlways 2.0 will remember these selections for you, even if you shut the Mac down and restart. If you change your mind and want to cancel a "Shown Always" for an application, simply switch to that application and select "UnHide <application> Always" from the application menu.
And there's more...
Ok, so when you've got everything else hidden, HideAlways 2.0 will let you specifically designate which applications and DA's you really want to see all the time. Some folks, however, would rather work with everything showing (they don't do a "Hide Others"), except one or two applications/DA's they never want to see. HideAlways 2.0 lets you do this. When you are not in "Hide Others" mode, HideAlways 2.0 changes the "Hide <this application>" menu item to "Hide <this application Always". When you select this for an application (or DA), HideAlways 2.0 makes sure that that application/DA's windows will not show as you switch from application to application. You can cancel this request by switching to the application and selecting "UnShow <application> Always" from the application menu.
